Joe Biden On The Environment

SAFEGUARDING DELAWARE’S NATURAL TREASURES
Senator Biden has been at the forefront of successful efforts to:

  • Secure White Clay Creek for future generations as a federally-protected Wild & Scenic River.
  • Transfer from the U.S. military nearly 1,200 acres of the most beautiful beach on the east coast to Cape Henlopen State Park.
  • Protect Pea Patch Island and Fort Delaware from devastating coastal erosion.Control flooding long the Little Mill Creek in Elsmere.
  • Designate the first federal scenic byways route in Delaware, Brandywine Valley Scenic Byway.

"We should not have to worry when grandfathers take their grandkids to a favorite fishing hole the streams are contaminated with dioxin; or when students turn on a faucet at school, they swallow arsenic; or that acid rain is showering usespecially when corporate responsibility could prevent it."Senator Joe Biden

THE BIDEN PLAN: MAKING A BETTER WORLD FOR OUR CHILDREN

Addressing Climate Change: Senator Biden is continuing his strong environmental record by co-sponsoring the most aggressive bill in the Senate to reverse global warming – the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act. The Act would implement aggressive policies to limit greenhouse gas emissions and help avert the major problems warming of our planet could cause – such as altering growing seasons; redistributing natural resources; and lifting sea levels.

Leading The World: Global warming requires a global solution. As Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Biden has made returning the US to a leadership role in international climate treaty negotiations a top priority. He co-authored a bipartisan resolution directing the President to return to international negotiations and reclaim a leadership role for the United States in the fight against global warming.

Reducing Power Plant Emissions: Senator Biden supports the Clean Power Act, directing the Environmental Protection Agency to require power plants to achieve specific reductions in emissions of sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and mercury.

Improving Fuel Efficiency In Cars And Trucks: Senator Biden wants to advance fuel economy by upgrading to a better system that combines protection for U.S. automobile manufacturing jobs with predictable increases in fuel efficiency standards for cars, SUVs, and light trucks. The new system would set fuel economy standards based on the attributes of a vehicle (such as its size and weight), reaching a 35 mpg by 2020.

Building Our Future With Environmentally-Friendly Energy: Senator Biden has proposed legislation directing automakers to gradually increase the number of flex-fuel vehicles – those able to use both regular gasoline and blends of up to 85 percent ethanol (E85). This bill also requires major oil companies to install E85 pumps at gas stations, and would boost the use of homegrown fuels in our national fuel supply by raising the renewable fuel standard benchmarks. Senator Biden believes that we must move past corn ethanol to cellulosic ethanol – ethanol made from stalks, switchgrass and other agricultural materials. Senator Biden is also a strong supporter of increasing use of renewable energy – like wind, solar and geothermal – and using energy more efficiently.

THE BIDEN RECORD: PROTECTING PRECIOUS RESOURCES
Protecting Alaska’s Wildlife: For many years, Senator Biden has co-sponsored legislation to permanently protect from oil and gas drilling one of the world’s last great wilderness areas – the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. The uncertain oil recovery does not justify the risk of potentially great harm to this rich environment.

Making Polluters Pay: Senator Biden has been an ardent supporter of efforts to reinstate the Superfund fees so that polluters pay for the cleanup of toxic sites, not taxpayers. Restoring these funds will speed up clean-ups.

Exchanging Debt-for-Nature: Senator Biden co-authored the plan that provides debt relief to developing nations in exchange for protecting tropical rainforests that are critical to the global climate.

Defending Clean Air and Water: Senator Biden has opposed those determined to roll back environmental safeguards and threaten the quality of our air and water. He fought the Administration’s plan to gut the New Source Review standards by allowing power plants to avoid their obligations to install modern pollution controls.

Sarah Palin On The Environment

Palin Denies
Man-Made Global Warming

When asked for her “take on global warming,” Palin replied, “A changing environment will affect Alaska more than any other state, because of our location. I’m not one though who would attribute it to being man-made.”   Source: Q&A with Newsmax.com's Mike Coppock Aug 29, 2008

Palin Is Suing To
Lift Protected Status For Polar Bears

After a multi-year court battle, the Bush administration recognized in 2008 that polar bears are threatened with extinction by global warming. Announcing Alaska’s suit to block the listing, Palin said, “We believe that the listing was unwarranted and that it’s unprecedented to list a currently healthy population based on uncertain climate models.”

Established Illegal Fly-By
Wolf Hunting Bounty

A  video from Defenders of Wildlife shows what aerial wolf hunting is about:

This is where hunters use a small plane to chase down wolf packs until they're exhausted and can't run.  Then they shoot them from the air or land. Then, they strap the wolf to a plane, cut off the wolf's left forearm, and bring it to the state Department of Fish and Game for their $150.00 cash reward.
What state game officials in Alaska will tell you is that it is necessary to kill predators in order to sustain the elk and caribou population, but what they won't tell you is that they kill wolves, bears and other predators in order to artificially boost the herd numbers so there are plenty of animals for the hunters to shoot.

Aerial wolf killing in Alaska started in the late 40’s before Palin was born. It has been and remains a sensitive issue in Alaska where the state is divided on “Wolf Control” methods.

$400,000 approved to
educate Alaskans about wolf killing

Opponents of the state's predator control program are blasting lawmakers and the governor for approving a $400,000 appropriation to educate Alaskans about the aerial shooting of wolves and efforts to reduce bears in some areas. They say the capital budget money is really an attempt to influence voters, who will decide next year whether to ban aerial shooting and land-and-shoot hunting by private citizens.  "It's outrageous," said co-sponsor Joel Bennett of Alaskans for Wildlife. "It looks like it's a clear effort to thwart the public will." State game managers don't know how they will spend the money but it won't be used to influence the election, said Ron Clarke, assistant director for the state's Division of Wildlife Conservation.

Palin Encourages our Soldiers to
Hunt From Helicopters

On her visit to Kuwait; Sarah Palin encouraged Alaska big game hunting to the troops  and informed Alaska National Guardsmen and women serving in combat that big game hunting opportunities will be available when they return from combat zones this fall.

"I heard from many Alaskans serving overseas during my trip to Kuwait in July," said Governor Palin. "One of the most frequent questions was about the status of hunting seasons upon their return. While I can't grant our troops the chance to hunt in closed areas or in places with species restrictions, I do want to recognize them and help them hunt this late fall or winter when they get home."

Not Pro-Life when it comes to Wolf Pups

As if this wasn't enough, now Palin's administration is allowing its "Department of Wildlife Conservation" to enter into wolf dens and slaughter wolf pups; in July, her employees went to retrieve adult wolf carcasses they had shot a month earlier from a helicopter and then found the wolves' pups in their den and so dispatched them one-by-one with pistol shots to the head. They then tried to conceal their actions from the public. When they were exposed, they said they had tried to place the orphaned wolves with zoos. Then the zoos said no one had contacted them.
